Nevada-based, family-owned business develops precision machined component that helps medical device find cancerous cells.

CARSON CITY, Nevada — Carson Manufacturing recently began mass-producing a customized, planetary gearhead that will help oncologists more quickly test human tissue for cancer. The gearhead, one of the company’s custom Eliminator Series Gearheads that is designed specifically for the medical device company’s needs, will help operate a precision machine to position and sort tissue samples.

“At Carson Manufacturing, we’re always looking for ways to innovate and make our world a better place,” said Kenny Penn, the company’s sales engineer. He represents the third generation in his family to operate Carson Manufacturing. “We were really excited to have this partnership to help advance medicine and science with the use of our custom planetary gearheads.”

The custom planetary gearheads will be part of instrument reagent systems that automate tissue and slide staining in anatomic pathology laboratories. These products assist in the diagnosis and treatment of cancer and infectious diseases.

To develop the gearheads, Carson Manufacturing’s team of engineers, machinists, and assemblers worked with the medical device company and its distributor to customize a solution. As a more than 40-year-old company that pioneered the design of planetary gearheads most commonly used by manufacturers today, Carson Manufacturing was the perfect choice for the job.

The family-owned organization is a leading manufacturer of planetary gearheads and a significant contributor in advancing planetary gearhead technology and research. Its Carson City plant houses an internal, proprietary research and development division where engineers and experts tirelessly work to perfect planetary gearhead product designs, improve efficiencies, and research new ground-breaking technology. Unlike other manufacturing companies, they offer no design fee for custom gearheads. Every design is strenuously tested under multitudes of variable conditions and various technical specifications and requirements. Learn more about their gearhead design innovations.

“Our company has made a substantial investment in research and development,” Penn said. “This allows us to work with each of our partners on an individual basis to create a custom planetary gearhead that fits their specifications and needs.”

This is the most recent example of Carson Manufacturing working with medical device companies to drive innovation and scientific advancement. In the past, they have worked with Bayer AG to create custom planetary gearheads for medical devices that help to automate and stabilize blood sample testing.

“By creating custom planetary gearheads like these, our team can support the scientists, doctors, and other medical professionals who are on the front-lines every day,” Penn said. “It’s an extension of our commitment to our community.”
