How to Select the Best RIGHT ANGLE GEARHEADS & SPEED REDUCERS

Right angle gearheads are the right tool for the job when you need to fit a motor into a tight space.

In these instances, when an inline gearhead won’t fit, a right angle speed reducer can be a more versatile and adaptable way to get the job done.

These right-angle planetary gearheads allow motors to be installed at right angles to the axis of equipment. This design type can be especially useful in assembly components, such as belt conveyors and mechanical door hinges. Some other applications of right angle gearheads include:

  • Automated welding equipment
  • Conveyor manufacturers
  • Medical appliances and MRI machines
  • Office equipment
  • Overhead doors and window manufacturers

  • Packaging and food handling machines
  • Printing equipment
  • Semi-conductor assembly machines
  • Surgical beds and tables
  • Vending machines

Because they incorporate a right angle, these gear reducers are ideal for keeping equipment compact. They are also often just as strong as inline gearheads and can handle similar levels of high torque.

Choosing the right, right angle gearhead

We work with our customers to deliver right angle planetary gearheads that fit their budgets and timelines.

Carson offers two lines of NEMA right angle planetary gearheads: the Right Angle Eliminator (RE) and the Right Angle Precision (RP). The Right Angle Eliminator line is offered in sizes 17, 23, and 34. The Right Angle Precision line is offered in sizes 17, 23, 34, 42, and 56. Both lines have standard ratios from 3:1 to 100:1 and can produce ratios up to 10,000:1. Both the RP and the RE lines deliver high torque and quiet, smooth operation.

In both the RE and the RP lines, the enclosure rating is IP65, and the operating temperature range is 20°F to 250°F. Both are made with hardened steel spiral miter gears. They are fully sealed and come with a stainless-steel output shaft. All the housing and mounting brackets are of aircraft-grade aluminum to reduce weight.

Custom right angle gearheads

In addition to the RE and RP lines, Carson Manufacturing regularly helps clients engineer and develop the right angle planetary gearhead their project requires. We can create the specific speed reducer for the job from slight modifications in existing designs to complete custom right angle gearheads built-to-suit. We see these projects as an opportunity to work with our clients to create solutions for their specific needs. By leveraging this type of gearhead’s adaptability, we can help make the right speed reducer for the project’s specifications.

Like the NEMA right angle gearheads, our custom right angle speed reducers also have the same enclosure ratings, temperature ranges and are made with hardened steel spiral miter gears. They are also fully sealed and come with a stainless steel output shaft. Like the RE and RP lines, all the housing and mounting brackets are of aircraft-grade aluminum to reduce weight.
